Harmonium and Nettles Harmonium and Nettles both highlight the theme of memory. As they both are looking back over past memories that are painful, the poems feature the feelings of being helpless in stopping the hurt that was caused. The writer in Harmonium feels remorse for the things he hadn’t said to his father as Armitage states “then mouth in reply some shallow sorry phrase or word too starved of breath to make itself heard”. The writer in Nettles is protective of the recurring threat to his child that he can’t destroy. “rain had called up tall recruits behind the shed,” this quote shows the father cannot destroy them .They differ in the way they felt powerless however as in Nettles the father is feeling powerless because of a physical threat whereas in Harmonium it is an emotional threat of the inevibility of death and unspoken feelings that makes the writer feel powerless.
In his essay “Working at Wendy's”, Joey Franklin conveys that he works at Wendy's because he feels that, even though the job may seem demeaning, it is something he has to do for the benefit of his family. Franklin uses short stories or anecdotes from earlier in his life or from those whom he works with to prove this point. Franklin in the end shows that he is willing to do anything to provide for his wife and son. Franklin's feeling of embarrassment begins when he recognizes a member of his Boy Scout troop who also works at Wendy's. This disgrace carries on throughout the story as Franklin is embarrassed and uncomfortable working at a fast food restaurant because of his high qualifications.
Eventually George comes to regard the capitalization and cooperation the Building and Loan embodies, as vital and rewarding work, and actual building as an important but lesser labor. From the vantage point of the heavens, Joseph and Clarence review some defining moments in George Baily’s young life. For George, these moments represent the fulfilling of duties, and as a result the passing of his lifelong dreams: travel, building things, and living a glamorous life away from Bedford Falls. As a boy he takes a beating from Mr. Gower in order to save the same from a horrible mistake. Taking his father’s place at the Building and Loan, he gives up (temporarily, he thinks) travel and education.
Hally has a very specific character and a very important function to the play. Hally is so important that it is even important to Fugard, and it helps him destroy his barrier. Hally might seem like a simple character in a play but there is much more to him than a character in a play. Hally isn’t a person with many friends, we could say his father is to blame. Due to his lack of friends he tries to create a bond with Sam and it makes it even more valuable due to Hally’s loneliness.

He is thoughtful one moment and conniving the next; he's willing to sacrifice for his family, but he's also willing sacrifice someone else's family for the benefit of his own, and he is unwilling to take responsibility for his own actions. “All my sons” is about living the American Dream. Joe has the house in the suburbs after WWII, has the perfect child, lives in the perfect neighborhood, and shares his life with the perfect neighbours. What Joe perceives as perfection was bought on lies and deceit. His feeling of family loyalty is based on disloyalty to others.

Even in the darkest hours, family is the one constant that will give support and love. The story of “The Prodigal Son” is about the love that a father has for a child even after that child has sinned against him. The younger of his sons wanted to live his own life, so he asked for his portion of his father’s estate. His father complied, and the son took off to a foreign land, where he wasted the money on parties and living extravagantly. After the money was gone, the son was abandoned by the friends that he met along the way.
As the movie progresses some of the characters do not change as much as the others do. One boy was pressured into going by their friends and when they find the ulterior motive behind this, they only seek a life of fame and glory after all or for the sake of becoming a hometown hero and to carry on a family name. One member of the group is on an emotional journey because of the confusion surrounding family issues and in particular the death of a sibling that causes him to think that he is confused regarding issues about his family. The journey undertaken by the group of boys has shown to viewers that the slightest journey in life can change a boy to a young man. The movie Stand By Me is seen to be a film where the children in the movie show the end of innocence and the beginning of adulthood.
After finding his sister he then began the journey of finding his lost son that he had no communication with in a very extended period of time. As they went from place to place they would tally up a new clue but less promising safety of Absolom. I respect the perseverance of Father Kumalo but the amount of selflessness shown by Msimangu . It is truly amazing that someone could stop his life and devote it to something he has no idea about in order to help a complete stranger out. Understanding this logic is very difficult, but also made me believe even stronger in my position.
