Respect the Blind: My Experience in Dialogue in the Dark I used to be taught that blind people need our help because they cannot see the world. However, the experience in the Dialogue in the Dark totally changed my idea. When I was young, I was afraid of dark and even nothing can eliminate my fear of the dark. The experience is a challenge for me and it subverts my understanding of lifestyle diversity. The most important thing I learned is that we are equal individuals regardless of any differences between us and respect is basis for everything. When I stepped into the dark room with my group mates, what greeted us was the complete darkness. The guide who named Tony gave each of us a tactile stick so that we could use it as assistance in the dark room. Also the tactile stick could help us better experience the life of blind people. When the door was closed, we were totally trapped in the dark. The dark was not like the dark in the night, because it is complete dark without any light even though I tried to find any slight light with eyes wide-open. I felt that my vision was useless and I become complete blind. This horrible feeling made me lose the sense of security and I did not want to move my step because I was totally shocked and scared by the unprecedented darkness. I wanted to quit but it was impossible and everything became hopeless to me. After a several minutes, I decided to face the reality of dark and I prayed that I could hold on to the end. To make myself calmer, I held my group mate Lisa’s arm to ensure that I will not be lost in the dark alone. In the dark trip, we followed Tony’s guidance and he was the only hope for me to escape from the dark. During this trip in the dark, we walked across grass, touched trees, smell flowers, heard birdsong, crossed a shaking bridge, walked on sand, took a ferry, crossed the street, touched various foods, watched a
