Research Task on the Opening Stages of World War One 1. Who were the following people and what role did they play in the opening stages of World War One? a) Von Moltke - Upon Alfred von Schlieffen's retirement in 1906 Moltke became Army Chief of Staff. His predecessor had drawn up the famous Schlieffen Plan, to be used during war to quickly defeat France in the west by means of a rapid, overwhelmingly powerful flank attack through Belgium and Holland, whilst a small army kept Russia at bay in the east. b) Von Falkenhayne - He served as Chief of the Imperial German General Staff for part of the First World War before his eventual dismissal by Kaiser Wilhelm II. c) Sir John French - French was promoted to Field Marshal in 1913 following a varied and distinguished career to date, which included the Sudan Campaign of 1884-85 and notable service as a cavalry officer in the Boer War. He served from 1912-13 as Chief of the Imperial General Staff. d) Joffre - Joffre, known as 'Papa Joffre', first saw service during the siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, serving afterwards in the French colonies. He was appointed Chief of the French General Staff in 1911 upon the recommendation of his mentor, Joseph Simon Gallieni. e) Von Kluck - Von Kluck saw active military service at an early age during the Seven Weeks' War of 1866 and, in 1870-71, the Franco-Prussian War. Rising through the army, he became inspector general of the Seventh Army District in 1913. f) Bethmann Hollweg - Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg (1856-1921) served as Chancellor of Germany from 1909-17, a period which included much of World War One, and during which he fought to maintain social and political coherency as the increasingly vocal liberal elite clashed with reactionary forces typified by the German military machine and monarchist state. 2.
