The 1991 videotaped beating of Rodney King by L.A.P.D. officers, and subsequent riots triggered by the acquittal of the officers involved, rocked L.A. and the nation. The events brought to the forefront concerns about racism and police brutality within the L.A.P.D. Some, including former L.A.P.D. Police Chief Daryl Gates, say the the way Los Angeles responded to these events helped set the stage for the Rampart scandal.
The Stonewall Riots, 1969 — A Turning Point in the Struggle for Gay and Lesbian Liberation This incident took place in New York’s Greenwich Village at the Stonewall Inn whereby homosexuals perform violent demostrations against a police raid. It is cited to be one of the first instant in American history for the homosexual community fought back when the government restrict sexual activities being approved, and it has since became the defining event that marked the start of gay rights movement in the United States around the world. The utilization of social work could have offset the cold and insensitive manner that HIV/ AIDS patients received. Currently the use of social work is more applicable in the fight against AIDS, as social workers continue to make significant and vital contributions whenever they see the challenge of
On top of that, I felt that the play would be more moving and informational than any of the concerts would be. I felt that I truly get something out of this play – there’s a specific message to it, and it shows the reality of the HIV problem that permeates urban life in our nation. I didn’t want to see the play just for the “STS” perspective; the technology of the play was secondary to me, but it greatly improved the play’s message. Looking back on it, the technology of any performance, play or concert, is crucial to engage the audience and most of all – make money. In other words, this play was conveyed through TD means, but the underlying message of the play was conveyed through
Hiswife, the black vocalist Laura Duncan first, and him perform it at Madison Square Garden. Then the song was introduced to Billie Holiday who first performed it at Café Society in 1939. Billie Holiday was an American jazz singer and songwriter. When Barney Josephson, founder of the Café Society in Greenwich Village, heard of the song he went and introduced it to Billie. At that time she was recording for Columbia. She said that when she’s singing the song, it made her fearful of retaliation, but because its imagery reminded her of her father, she continued to sing it.
An example of this was the watts riots in 1965 which was spurred by the “un-justified” to some arrest of an African American citizen 21-year-old Marquette Frye. It was a six day riot in protest of unfair arrests and resulted in mass violence and destruction by not only black citizens but by whites too who had no intention in doing what they did for the sake of demanding more civil rights for blacks. Not even all the blacks who were involved were doing it for the intended purpose but did it for the hell of it. This showed a difference in intentions between such events as the watts riots and the march on Washington two years prior. Media coverage was also a major factor in showing the loss of direction.
With this newfound inspiration came an urgent desire to get off the streets and make something of himself. Charles made his way out of Brooklyn through Job Corps, which is a federal program for helping underprivileged families. In addition to living on the streets, Charles Bradley faced being abandoned by his mother, illiteracy, violence, the murder of his brother and nearly a fatal illness. Despite going through all of these setbacks, they did not stop Charles from pursuing his dream of becoming a professional singer. This just goes to show that your goals really are achievable.
Michael was involved in many charities, including the establishment of Michael Jackson Burn Center for Children, and an organization called, “Heal the World,” which he shortly after dedicated a song to. “Heal the World” was established to help provide medicine to children and fight world hunger, child exploitation, homelessness, and abuse. As he would always say in his lyrics he wanted to “improve the conditions for children throughout the world.” Apart from the donated money, Jackson contributed his massive talent to the charity society that was both unique, and exclusive. His involvement with charity work allowed his career and music to affect the souls of millions of people around the world. He was soon one of the most successful
On television today it can be argued that convicts are portrayed as African Americans too often. In a recent article for the Journal of Communication Travis L. Dixon conducted a survey of Los Angeles County adults to determine whether exposure to the overrepresentation of blacks as criminals on local news programs, attention to crime news, and news trust predicted perceptions of blacks and crime. His study found out that, “Heavier consumption of Blacks’ overrepresentation as criminals on local television news was positively related to the perception of Blacks as violent. The theoretical implications of these findings are discussed in light of chronic activation and accessibility of stereotypical constructs,”
According to Gottlieb (33), political activists used Graffiti mainly to make statements while the street gangs used it to mark their territory. However, the real form of graffiti, which is regarded as modern graffiti, began in the 1960s in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania in the U.S. In order to gain attention from the public and local press, Cornbread and Cool Earl
