In high school, and in any type of situation or setting, homework has numerous benefits. Through practice and participation in learning tasks, homework can improve the students’ achievement. Moreover, homework improves the development of personal skill such as time management that is especially important for highschoolers who are constantly busy and engaged in academic and extracurricular activity. The school’s current homework policy states that homework should not exceed two hours on a school night and should not be assigned before holidays or weekends. The school board probably decided this policy in the beginning of the academic year after hours of tedious analysis and lengthy discussions. If so, then why remove it? The current restrictions pertaining to the homework policy should not be removed because the policy behaves in three ways: it ensures protected time, avoids consequences related to health, and increases student proficiency. First of all, restrictions should not be removed because it ensures the students the minimum amount of protected time. By protected time, it applies to holidays and weekends. The definition of vacation (or holiday) is a period of suspension of work, study, or other activity, usually used for rest, recreation, or travel. Vacation was a protected time created and regulated by the school to give students time to relax and refresh the mind. Vacations improve the students’ mental skills because a well-rested mind that is free of worry is often more effective. Not only that, but vacations strengthen family ties. Too often, family relationships suffer because of the students’ fast-paced daily routine. A vacation is a great opportunity to discover each other in a different setting and to build lasting memories.
