Summary/Response for “Athletes and Education” In this article, “Athletes and Education,” Neil H. Petrie reflects on his life and uses his life examples to try to prove that the college athletic system is flawed. In the way that colleges use the athletes for entertainment, but when it comes to getting an education the students are cut short. 2Petrie presents that colleges are all talk when it comes down to their student athletes going to school for a good education. Petrie says that the pressures put on athletes compromises their academics. Also, the endless hours on the field which drains even the best students’ mentally and physically.
Playing college football is a privilege, not a business. Players should be playing for the love of the game and not the money. Also many college players already have a free ride through out their four years of college or until they decide to go pro because they are already receive many things from the school and it’s not fair to other athletes who play a different sport who don’t get paid as well because they work hard for their sport just like college football players do. College football for players isn’t a business. Being able to play college football for a school is a privilege.
So they all gathered as a family one day and decided to ask Michael if he was okay and that if he wanted to join the family, Michael was slightly confused because he already thought he was part of the family, they were all happy. Michael started playing football but he wasn’t as successful Coach Burt expected him to be that’s when Leigh Anne intervened and told him to defend his team as he would defend her and the family. Psychological theories explain why an individual behaves and is motivated to do things. Theories uncover other aspects of a person’s life and bring understanding as to why they did things and how their life turned out. Through using these theories, I can conclude that Pete was motivated and possibly driven very hard by his father. Being the oldest and his father being a semi-pro football player, he was constantly prodded to be a successful athlete. Once conquering the amateur level and attaining the major league level, his environment affected his other behaviors.
At age 16 my aunty dropped out of high school and her life has been a living hell ever since. The age requirement to drop out of high school should remain the same because at 16 the part of the brain, called the Frontal Lobe, which controls decision making, isn’t completely developed. “Students who receive poor grades, who repeat a grade, or who are over-age for their class are more than likely to drop out.” (Do Something) Students who receive poor grades are likely to not care, get upset, or do something about it. Getting bad grades really affects you when you put so much time in that subject. If you don’t do the work, how do you expect to get good grades?
Teaching them the basics of being a man while at the same time teaching them the importance of team work and perseverance through whatever life throws at you. These life lessons usually take most a long time to learn. Football isn’t everything, and there is more to life, but football does help to create a man that can contribute something more to society than just being a football player. Football helped to turn these boys into men, by putting them into situations that most, if not properly prepared would just crumble and fail. Fifty years ago, things were way different than how they are today. Kids had to go to school and were respectful to their peers or they would get in a huge amount of trouble, kids were expected to help their parents around the house or does some yard work outside. Nowadays kids do nothing and expect so much in return.
