The people conquered by charlemegne , after being converted to christianty, were taught through the bible of codes that taught right and wrong. It was nesscary for the church to play a role in this education of the people, because only the clergy were educated. The church also guided charlemagene’s hand as a ruler, for he took on many conquests and missions so this way the Christian relgion could spread throught Europe. Indeed, his desire and passionate to spread his kingdom and government was interwined with his desire to spread the Christian relgion and have the people live according to the word of god. At that beginning of the caroligian dynasty the church was suffering from problems.
The First Crusade began in 1095 after the speech of Pope Urban at the Council of Clermont. There were many reasons as to why people joined the First Crusade, including religious, economic and social factors. I believe that the most important reason is the religious factor. This is because since religion was so important and present at this time, people were constantly reminded of the fact that it was their right as Christians to kill the infidel and claim their ‘rightful’ holy place in Jerusalem. Pope Urban, in 1095, gave a speech which called people to crusade.

The Orthodox Church was the main denomination of the Ottoman empire which was located in eastern Europe and Asia Minor. The Largest Christian denomination of the Late Middle Ages was the Roman Catholic Church. As the Mother of Christianity and the main guideline to the later branches of Christianity, the Roman Catholic Church was under a lot of pressure during the late Middle Ages. In some cases the Church didn’t live up to their prestige and was forced to reform, like at the Council of Trent.
The medieval church: The Christian church influenced life in the middle ages by numerous church activities, such as spiritual services, political powers, economic activities, social services, educational work and missionary work. Spiritual Services: The sacraments were a sacred ritual of the church and they were the only way to avoid eternal suffering in hell. By participation in the sacraments and following your faith you could avoid that eternal suffering. Political Powers: The Church has absolute power over the religious life of Christians in the middle ages. The church had created its own set of laws, which applied to religious teachings, behavior of the clergy and it also provided morals for life and marriage.
Feudalism, or a class system that regulates relationships among classes of people, was furthered by the Church and helped mold daily life. Other reasons why the Middle Ages can be labeled as the Age of Faith include the various reform movements initiated and roles the pope played. The era between 500 and 1400 in Western Europe, or the Middle Ages, can be labeled the Age of Faith because of the Church’s influence in unification throughout Western Europe, daily life, and politics. Although the Church didn’t come into its full potential for power until about the eleventh century, the Catholic Church did have a lot of influence in uniting Western Europe. Right after the Roman Empire fell, many Germanic tribes went to war with each other and carved Western Europe into small kingdoms.
When the Hundred Years War broke out, both side decided to use their ability to tax the church granted to the kings by the church as a repayment for the crusades. When the church refused to pay France, they kidnapped Pope Boniface VIII. The Pope died soon after his rescue and the cardinals elected a French pope so as not to stir trouble again. But instead of moving to Rome, the new Pope Clement V stayed in Avignon. A new string of Popes would settle in Avignon for the next 70 years where the French kings were able to maintain a firm hold on the papacy.
The First Crusade and the Propagation of Religion The First Crusade was a military attempt by Roman Catholic Europe to regain control over the Holy Lands of Jerusalem, in which the Muslims had taken control of in 661. During this crusade, knights and peasants from many areas of Western Europe went on this pilgrimage, first stopping at Constantinople and then continuing on to Jerusalem. In the group of crusaders, the peasants greatly out numbered the military knights. Many crusaders did not make it the long journey, and the lasting crusaders were mostly the knights, as they were better trained and prepared for such combat. Once the Knights reached Jerusalem, they took control by ransacking every building and torturing and killing almost all of the 60,000 unarmed civilians living in Jerusalem.
