Rehabilitation in the Community Rehabilitation in the community refers to sanctions that are imposed on convicted adults, as well as adjudicated juveniles, that occur in a community setting as opposed to incarceration. The purpose of a community sentence is to repair the harm the offender has caused and to reduce the risk of reoffending in the future. Probation forms the basis of community supervision, while most other sanctions are programs or conditions of probation (Alarid, 2013). These other community sanctions range from residential programs, to economic sanctions, to nonresidential options. Probation is the first and most popular form of rehabilitation in the community. All other forms of rehabilitation, ultimately branch off from probation. Probation is defined as “the release of a convicted offender under conditions imposed by a court for a specified period, during which time that court retains authority to modify those conditions or to resentence the offender if he or she violates those conditions” (Alarid, 2013). The purpose of probation is to assist in reducing crime among offenders in the community ("American Probation and Parole Association", 2009). The mission of probation is to protect the public interest and safety by reducing the incidence and impact of crime. Boot camp is a nonresidential program that is a form of rehabilitation in the community. The idea of boot camp programs for offenders was borrowed from the military concept of breaking existing habits and thought patterns, as well as rebuilding offenders to be more disciplined. They do this through intensive physical training, hard labor, drill and ceremony, and rigid structure. There are two different forms of boot camp programs. The first is the inside prison walls.
