Scientific Underpinnings of the Tidal Model of Mental Health Recovery: Critical Appraisal
It is important to understand nursing theory and its foundation to appreciate the unique profession and how theory is integrated into nursing practice. This paper will reflect the nursing theory of the Tidal Model of Mental Health Recovery, by theorist and psychotherapist, Phil Barker. Barker provides a framework specific to psychiatric-mental health nursing in a way that is conducive to both the professional and the person by uniting them in a collaborative approach unique to the discipline. The purpose of this paper is to further discuss the theory in terms of its relevance to connecting theory to the practice of nursing, and specifically to advanced practice in the psychiatric-mental health setting.
In this paper, I will describe Barker’s theory in terms of its purpose, definitions, relationships and structure, and assumptions. Further, I will identify the paradigm that Barker’s theory represents and critique it from both an empiric and aesthetic point of view. Lastly, I will demonstrate by discussing how his theory has potential for more intense reflection in the field of psychiatric-mental health nursing.
I chose the Tidal Model of Mental Health Recovery based upon my role as an advanced practice psychiatric-mental health nurse. I connect well to Barker’s theory as his emphasis is two-fold and includes patient self-management and the fundamental care processes of nursing. (Barker & Buchanan-Barker, 2010)
Being an advocate of recovery, I often coach patients and promote self-management through supportive and insight-oriented psychotherapy. Assisting patients to draw from their own strengths and what worked well for them in the past is important for present and future
