The author’s purpose for writing Red Scarf Girl was to share her and her families experiences during the Cultural Revolution. The author shared all of the hardship her family went through being a “black family” and being shunned and disgraced for her grandfather’s actions even though he had died long ago. Her grandfather was a landlord and during the Cultural Revolution people accused the landlords and they’re families of being some sort of whip master who treated they’re people like slaves. Even though young Jiang Ji-li never even knew her grandfather she was treated as though she was a landlord herself. The author of the story Jiang Ji-li herself tells her story of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The main theme in this novel was unfair judgment. During that time many families were persecuted and treated awfully because of they’re families past. Even if you had not met the family member than had done “wrong” they’re were considered to be just the same in class. People were constantly accused of doing things that they had never even heard of before. For example Ji-li’s father was detained for listening to foreign radio. When they’re family didn’t even own a radio of any kind! During and After the Chinese Cultural Revolution many of the Chinese citizens escaped the chaos by fleeing to the United States which helped our economy some because the Chinese brought many of their new ideas. Other than that the revolution mainly effected china. During that time many families had their houses “searched “or better said ransacked by the red guards looking for four olds which was a big part of the revolution Chairman Mao had said that four olds were holding the country back and that they needed to be eliminated. So Red Guards would show up to “black families” households and completely destroy everything searching for four olds once they were found they were
