Stephanie Nathania 1442945 Under the Influence Reading Response I heard a lot about alcoholism and addiction before, but never thought that it would bring a real bad impact to the family of the alcoholics. The author Scott Russell Sanders himself, have experienced to live with an alcoholic under the same roof. During his youth, his dad always went home drunk and no matter what the family member tried to stop him from doing so, it will never work. Russell explains that his dad could be fun to hang out with, playful and friendly when he was sober. But, when his dad came home and was under the influence of the alcohol, he could abuse him, his mom, brother or sister. Suppose if Russell’s mom, would want to stop his dad from doing so, his dad would became more violent than ever. The result was pretty obvious, his brother and sister pulled back from his dad, making his family distant from each other. Only Russell has the thought of taking care of his father and unites each of the family members. By the time Russell grew up, he started to find out about alcoholism. From that moment, he knew that the alcoholic could affect the family members. I nearly cried to hear that the author, Russell was also having a hard time after all those youth years spent with an alcoholic. He carried his burden from the past until his adulthood. In order to distract him from those alcohols, he became a workaholic, as he was scared that he could not get out from alcohol, just like his father. He, Russell then describes that his dad passed away at the age of sixty-four. While for the rest of the family, they, including him would always have the scar that will remain in their heart as long as they live. The conclusion of the story tells us the reader that he, Russell promise to never drink, maybe only a glass of wine and a can of beer but he did not want anything stronger than that. I felt that
