Listen, Read & React Assignment Freedom to me ties in with equality. I believe that without equality freedom can never truly be achieved. Freedom is being able to live, prosper, and practice religion without mental or physical restraints. After I read the article, I was personally taken back by Assata’s struggle for freedom both from mental and physical oppression. The part that captured my attention was her two years spent in solitary confinement in the basement of a male prison. Within the article she discusses how it played a role on her mental freedom not being able to socialize and challenge her mind. In Common’s song he describes the experience as weakening her soul, but in the end it made her stronger and gave her a new outlook on freedom. I think he accurately showed the struggles Assata went through. His lyrics paint a mental picture of the New Jersey Turnpike incident, and the physical abuse done to her by the police. After listening to the song there was a better understanding and more empathy for Assata’s struggles than there was after I read the article, even though they had the same message. I believe Hip- Hop is an advocate for the people it relays the message to the masses in a way that is relatable and better understood. I personally feel that Assata’s freedom came with a price. Although she is free from the physical restraint of her small cell in MiddleSex, she still has to deal with both not being able to see her family and the mental wounds that live within her. It is unbelievable to me that even years after she escaped there were people still trying to have her returned to the US. This further emphasizes corruption in the higher levels in the hierarchy of society. This was especially evident in her trial where there was clear evidence that proved that she could not have possibly pulled the trigger that killed the state trooper. This
