Diane Burns: Background Assignment Briefly describe Burn’s life. Discuss how being a Native American influenced her, how she got into writing poetry, what happened to her in Nicaragua, and what brought about her death. Diane burns is a Native American poet who is much celebrated and who died from drugs and alcohol at the age of 50. Her Native background shows in her work. I believe the fact that her parents were teachers had lot to do with the fact that she became a poet. She and some other poets were invited to a festival in Nicaragua. Burns and another one of the poets (who was already married) got married and spent the time in Nicaragua honeymooning. Burns had a bad drug and alcoholic problem which caused her to lose custody of her daughter and later caused her death at the age of 50. Read the following articles about Native Americans and alcoholism. Summarize these articles in at least four paragraphs. Include a quote from each article and document correctly. Addictions It is quite interesting to read the statistics about Native Americans and alcoholism. I was not aware that alcohol affected so many Native Americans at such a young age. There is not a lot of proof of why the statistics are the way they are, but it may have to do with the past rituals that the Natives are used to. According to the article, 12% of the native deaths are alcohol-related compared to 3% in the U.S. Fighting Alcohol and Substance Abuse Among Native American Indians This is an interesting article that goes in depth about the concerns of alcohol on the Native Americans. Adolescent teens are more at risk than American teens because they have to deal with the normal stresses that teenagers deal with, plus they have identity issues.
