Schulte 17 May 2012 In The Beginning The United States Army is a vast organization with a global presence. One of its central sources of strength is the diversity of its workforce, which encompasses 1.5 million personnel across the active, reserve, civilian, and contractor components. While the Army was at the forefront of racial integration in the 1950s and today is one of the most diverse organizations in the U.S., further progress needs to be made on the diversity front. Most likely because they stereotypes that follow whites are less harsh then those that follow other races, and ethnicities. I know that the Army community is a very diverse one, and for the most part those in the military do not show certain favoritism for any specific group of people, but there are those who choose who they want to befriend and get to know. I have had firsthand knowledge of people who will only get to know someone of their ethnicity, I think that is not only wrong, but so closed minded and sends the wrong message to our children. A common misperception is that only certain persons or groups are included under the umbrella term “Diversity.” In fact, exactly the opposite is true. While the dimension of race is often the sole focus when the topic of diversity is addressed, diversity includes the entire spectrum of an individual’s primary dimensions, including race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, disability, and sexual orientation. The term also encompasses secondary dimensions, including communication style, work style, organizational role/level, economic status, and geographic origin. This paper could focus on any one of the primary or secondary dimensions listed above. I focus on racial demographics because, as noted by retired General Shinseki above, racial diversity is a source of strength for the Army. It is my belief that race—and in particular, the dynamics between blacks and Whites—play a unique and historically significant role in issues of diversity in the Army. Techniques found to be useful in the dimension of racial diversity will be applicable in other dimensions, such as gender.
