An Individual vs. A Community Leaving a community that an individual is comfortable with is a difficult process. Not only that, but moving into a community where an individual has to live with complete strangers is even worse. It is a large culture shock that many individuals need time to adjust to. This is where many students realize that they want to find themselves and create their own personal identity, but what defines an identity? This is the same question that the individuals at Quinnipiac University discussed as the incoming freshmen began moving into their new home. The QU 101 seminar at Quinnipiac University highlights important topics that are essential to the course: The first of three interdisciplinary seminars at the heart of our innovative general education curriculum, it introduces our freshmen to the core value that most fully encompasses Quinnipiac’s stated mission as a university: community. Accordingly, the course introduces students to academic perspectives that address human nature, individuality, and the goals of the community, while easing their transition into a new community – Hamden, Connecticut – and a new type of community – Quinnipiac University”(v).
