Psychoanalytic approach to Mathilde’s character in “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant Introduction Guy De Maupassant (1850-1893) was a French novelist and short story writer. He has written number of short stories and novels. He had also written 3 dramas. “The Necklace,” his short story is one of his most brilliant works. This short story was written in 1885. The story revolves around two characters, Mr. and Mrs. Loisel. Mathilde, Mrs. Loisel was born in family of clerks. She was very beautiful but born in poor family of clerks. She considered herself out of place and thought that she should have born to a rich family. But unfortunately she was married to a clerk. Though married to a clerk, yet she kept dreaming about luxuries of life. One day her husband brought an invitation card for a ball that was going to be held in minister’s house. She feels unhappy because she lacked fine clothes and jewelry. She got fine clothes by getting some money from her husband but she had to borrow a necklace from her husband. This defense mechanism is termed as rationalization. She had developed her own standards (superego). Mathilde don’t want to visit her friend because she is rich and her status is much higher than her own. She doesn’t want to go to party because she thinks that “there is nothing more humiliating than to have a shabby air in the midst of rich women”. So finally she borrowed a necklace to satisfy her needs. Her party was a great success; she achieved what she desired i.e. to get attention of rich and young men. When the party is over her husband threw around her the wrap that he brought with her in order to protect themselves from cold.
