THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Background of the Study An attitude is a hypothetical construct that represents an individual's degree of like or dislike for something. Attitudes are generally positive or negative views of a person, place, thing, or event. This is often referred to as the attitude object. People can also be conflicted or ambivalent toward an object, meaning that they simultaneously possess both positive and negative attitudes toward the item in question (Wikipedia, 2011).

For nursing students, attitude is a melting pot of the knowledge they gained and the passion in caring they have shown. Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles (Videbeck, 2010)

Nursing is not just a collection of tasks. To provide safe and effective care to the clients, nurses must integrate knowledge, skills and attitudes to make sound judgment and decisions. One of the special processes taken or undergone by the nursing students is psychiatric nursing. The psychiatric nurse is usually one of the first people a patient will see when he is admitted to a mental hospital. He or she will be monitoring most of the patient's plan of care and implementing doctors' orders. A nurse in a psychiatric setting helps to implement the plan of care, as set forth by the doctor and follows his treatment orders. Psychiatric nurse helps the patient with everyday care. The nurse will administer medications to the patient as ordered, as needed (Galka, et al, 2005).
