Progressive Era Chapter DBQ Essay Within the late 1800s and early 1900s, many muckrakers have worked to bring about change in their community. The unions, media and government play an important role in this period. During the Progressive Era, there were many economic, political and social reform needed which many people came into realization that they could change these problems. One economical problem was the quality of processes goods. Many monopoly owners did not care about what was put in their product and just cared about profit. Immigrants had to buy these products and consume them because there were few other options to pick from and they were very poor. Most younglings died and most adults faced starvation. Muckrakers tried to fix this and soon enough, Upton Sinclair writes The Jungle in response to what he witnesses. This was a detailed book about horrible working conditions and everything that was put in the meat hoppers. Theodore Roosevelt reads this book and passes certain bills in Congress. Some include The Meat Inspection Act and The Pure Food and Drug Act. The first one made all meat factories and other similar factories subjected to inspection. The second checked for improper labeling and advertising for foods and drugs. That is one economical problem fixed by the muckrakers. One social problem was addressed by women themselves, Women’s Suffrage. Women did not have the right to vote or sustain a job outside of the house. Many machines such as the vacuum and the sewing machine reduced the need for certain housework. Most women made decent meals for their family and cared for their baby in the horrible conditions of their tenement. This life of uncheerfulness was repetitive and boring.
