The Affect Privatization Has On Mental Health Services In order to improve cost-effectiveness and quality, states have made an attempt to privatize mental-health care in Wake County and across the state. In other words, they are trying to save money and reduce the cost of their budget, but in reality they are decreasing the quality of service. Since privatization has taken place, it has affected the delivery of services to mental-health clients in several ways. When previously government-provided services are turned over to private sectors, it can have a tremendous impact on patients who are extremely sick because they might not be able to get the special treatment that they need. Many mental-health care providers have shut down because of privatization. As a result, many social workers are out of a job. Many social workers have dedicated their jobs to serving and helping extremely ill and disadvantaged people. Privatization will strip away the relationship that these workers have with their clients because they will no longer be committed to working one on one with them any more. Social workers understand the family dynamics and they are working with clients to cope with life and other social problems, but once they privatize these services that relationship becomes damaged. Privatization will have an impact on the social worker and the client’s stability with each other because of the transition they will have to make. Privatized agencies are more interested in the dollars, but social workers are more interested in the client’s health and well-being. Privatized agencies are not really concerned about the client’s welfare; they only bring in people to show them how to make a dollar because they are trying to save money. In conclusion, privatization will cause a problem to society because when these mentally ill people are released into society and back with their families without adequate supervision, crime rates will begin to rise and this will cause problems for many communities. These people need trained social workers who are equipped to deal with their emotional illness. Trained social workers do regularly follow-up home visits which are important because it allows them to stay on top of psychological problems or whatever is going on, but privatized agencies are not interested in
