There are STG’s that were created outside of the prison walls and were formed on the inside as those members became incarcerated. There are STG’s that are active both inside and outside of the prisons. No matter what kind of gang it is, every gang presents serious problems and concerns for the prisons and for law enforcement outside of the prisons. Of the numerous gangs that operate in the prison systems today there are a few that are larger and better known then others. Some of those larger gangs include, The Aryan Brotherhood, The Black Guerilla Family and The Mexican Mafia.
Northern cliques may have conflict with other Norteno gangs on the streets, yet in prison they will bond together for protection under the leadership of the Nuestra Familia. The Nuestra Familia has a chain of command that oversees every Norteno gang in California. Nortenos have been identified in nearly every state in the United States of America. Nortenos have continued to be heavily involved in murders, felony assaults, thefts and drug sales. Northern gangs are bitter enemies to the EME and Southern street gangs.
These two men were once united together in the Crips, but ended splitting up and having their own sets. Washington and Williams both decided to unite their sets together from the west and east sides of South Central Los Angeles so they could rival other street gangs in the surrounding areas of their hood. The Crips’ original name was “Cribs”. This name was decided between two other names: The Black Overlords and The Assassins. The gang chose “Cribs” due to the fact that many of the gang members were still very young so they associated this word with their age group.
Walnut Street Jail Janice Tighe Harrison College History of Criminal Justice Mr. Royer 10/17/11 As a Criminal Justice student it is important to know and understand some of the history of our Criminal Justice system. One aspect to know would be the history of our correctional system, in particular the Walnut Street Jail. Before the creation of the Walnut Street Jail life for prisoners was cruel and inhumane. As our text states “By the late eighteenth century, men, women, and children were till mixed together in many American jails. Before the birth of the modern penitentiary at Walnut Street (Philadelphia) in 1790, prisoners endured unimaginable squalor” (Roth, 2011, p. 86).

Kody’s life would be greatly affected by the outnumbering gangs growing around the area where he lived.
Gangs in the United States CCJ 4656 Instructor Khatibloo May 4, 2013 Cheryl Pulley Gangs in the United States The crips gang originated in Los Angeles in the mid to late 1960s. The crips gang has loosely constructed subgroups, most of which are from specific neighborhoods. Members dress in a specific fashion, display colors (blue associated with crips); use monikers, sometimes display gang names or monikers on clothing, and communicate through graffiti. When gang members become more serious about drug trafficking, they also become more discreet about calling attention to themselves with these signs of gang affiliation. (www.gangsorus.com) The name crip is short for cripple.
These sets forming together resulted in a rivalry that stretched to higher-up affiliations between the rival gang alliances People Nation (Blood affiliation) and Folk Nation (Crip affiliation) which started in the Chicago area but has spread all over the United States. There are estimated to be up to 20,000 Blood members and Blood gang activity has been reported in 123 cities and 33 states. Although the gang was initially formed as protection against the higher numbered Crip gang, the Bloods objectives are similar to other street gangs such as obtaining capital and control over territory against enemies, and will act violently to secure it. The problem we face with street gangs such as the Bloods is the increase in numbers and the spread to rural/upcoming areas. The criminal activity tied to these gangs bring negative effects to places that may not have seen gang activity previously, such as more crime and poverty, drug abuse, illegal immigrants, etc.
Prison life can be very treacherous. Overcrowding exaggerates conflicts and tensions that occur on an average day, which makes the task of keeping the prison secure and safe. Inmates within the prison as a rule are joined by racial groups; at times the racial groups are joined together by gang affiliation. The prison’s surroundings impact the institutional management and custody by the mounting populace and the gangs within the facility. The rise of gang membership has divided the shared system into contending groups, which amplifies the potential for violence.
WP2 Synthesis 7/6/2012 Gangs Gangs in the world today have been a major issue to all governments. Gangs will continue to be a problem in our world today because of an informal market, poverty and the youth today. Danny Malec wrote a review on Transforming Latino Gang Violence in the United States. In this article he believes and understands that due to the United States having an informal market, seduces the youth today by replacing family role models with gang members. Grossman agrees with Malec’s views, while taking a media strong stand point on this issue.
That experience gave me a whole new aspect of the people behind the law. There are many ethical issues/problems in the prison system that needs to be evaluated (in my opinion). Ethical Issues/Problems #1 (Officers against Inmates) Inmates are placed with different levels of crimes. For example: Inmate Jones is doing time for murder in the 1st degree (Level-High Classified) and Inmate Smith is doing time for robbery in the 2nd degree (Level-Medium Classified). These two inmates along
