There are three underlying principles that define the CLA: Human beings are information processors and that mental representations guide behaviour, mental processes can and should be studied scientifically by developing theories and by using a variety of research methods, Social and cultural factors affect cognitive processes. Purpose of the principles is that the principles are the main ideas that have driven focused research on specific areas of behaviour and cognition. They also allow us to understand how behaviour can be influenced by cognitive processes and cognition refers to a process that is based on one's mental representations of the world, such as images, words and concepts. People likewise have different experiences and therefore each individual will have different mental representations of the world. Cognitive psychologists believe that mental processes and stored representations of the world determine behaviour and are central to human experience.

This duty of care can be a general implied minimum standard of care or can be outlined in different codes of practice or guidelines in various legislation. The healthcare professional must always keep front of mind that with this kind of role comes a certain amount of responsibility. 3. Duty of care in the workplace and how it affects my role In the workplace being conscious of the duty of care and ensuring that it is front of mind in every aspect of the job is very important. It is a way of working and an integral part of every aspect of the healthcare provision i provide. Those individuals under my care can, and should, expect that I will carry out my work in a professional and supportive way ensuring that they are not exposed to harm or any unnecessary or preventable risks.
Secondly, I need to be aware of my behaviour and its impact on others. I also need to project positive energy to the work environment and constantly provide encouragement to staff. To be a good role model means I have to be diplomatic and treat everyone the same; there can be no prejudices or preferences for people. It is important for me to respect people and their viewpoints, always listen to people and make people feel valued and lastly always act with integrity and professionalism. To be an effective leader requires certain traits that are either inherent to a person or can be learnt.
