Presidential Outline: George Washington I. George Washington (1732-1799) II. Birth / Residential State: Virginia / Virginia III. Educational and Occupational Background: a. Education: Augustine’s death, George’s father, prevented George from going to England for a formal, classical education. It is thought that he crossed the Rappahannock River to Fredericksburg to study at the school kept by Rev. James Marye, rector of St. George’s Parish. His later writings show that he was very sensitive about his lack of advanced education. His experience on the frontier and in the army helped him to gain confidence and leadership to offset his lack of education. b. Occupations: i. Surveying (1747) ii. Lieutenant (1754) iii. Mount Vernon Land Manager (1759) iv. Served in Virginia House of Burgesses (1774? 16yrs) IV. Presidential Term: (1789-1797) V. Issues of the Election: 1789 – One of the biggest difficulties was persuading Washington to run for president because he felt his calling was to a quiet life. Once he was convinced, the issue was that only 10 states participated in the election and George Washington received at least one of the two votes from each representative. John Adams, runner up, became Washington’s vice president. 1792 – At this time Washington badly wanted to retire. He was 68 and his health was deteriorating and he felt Mt. Vernon calling his name.
