The idea that addiction is a behavioral choice and not the result of a brain repeatedly being subjected to addictive substances is inconsistent with what scientists are learning about how the addicted brain functions. If, as Schaler states, anyone can stop or moderate their use anytime they want to, why don’t they? Why are there people who want to quit using and can’t? And if using addictive drugs is just a choice, how would one explain the concept of relapse or addicts in recovery who have to learn how to successfully resist the incessant urge to use again? His claim that anyone can stop or moderate their use anytime they want to is illogical.
In my Psychology book in one chapter it talked about the alcohol impairment and how it can then create bad judgment. Because alcohol acts to depress the reticular activating system, several things occur. The altering mechanism is depressed such that a person does not become aware of potentially hazardous or dangerous situations that the sensory functions detect. The sensory functions themselves are deteriorated and may not be supplying complete or correct information to the brain. A person's motor of functions is impaired; yet, because of alcohol's depressant effect that person will feel less inhibited and more self confident about themselves.
Getting at the mundane aspect I can understand how things get mundane. Our lives seem to be completely tied to other peoples’ lives. It’s hard to go through a single class period at school without receiving some gossip in one form or another. Deresiewicz says before in the essay, “This is what the contemporary self wants. It wants to be recognized, wants to be connected: It wants to be visible”.
Other variables are single or no parent home, truancy, low or no parental supervision and gang membership. The juvenile crime rates from what I have researched seem to involve treatment of a child in the home. As for me my juvenile problems stemmed from a step-father who was abusive, verbally mentally and physically. My mother did drugs to forget the abuse that my step-father did to her. Because of me witnessing my step-father abuse my mother I felt like it was normal.
They are not able to be housed with general population in fear that they will be retaliated against by other prisoners. The inmates in this unit may consist of sex offenders, ex-police officers, child abusers, and even rejected gang members. For these reasons they are put into their own unit for their “protection” from harm that fellow inmates may want to inflict on
You can use constructive feed back to build on use it as a tool not a negative. Work as part of a team; keep calm listen and respect, the people you are working with. Your past experiences can also help, and using your own initiative being positive. Appraisals are good way to receive constructive feedback, this will show your strengths and weakness, you might need more training on your moving and handling as you are not using the equipment properly. I receive positive feedback from my manager, she had over heard me talking to a service user who was being challenging with me, she explained she was very happy with the way I dealt with the situation calmed things down before they became worst.
His mother spent time in jail, she was an excessive drinker, and she often abandoned a young Manson to go out. He was soon placed in public institutions, and beginning at the age of nine, he was caught up in many petty crimes and sent to boys reformatories. Manson was said to do good work at school, but only when he could see there was something in it for him. He showed many sociopathic tendancies as a young child an teen, and a psychiatrist said he would one day become a "fairly slick institutionalised youth". Later in his life, Manson was found to have raped another boy whilst holding a razor to his throat, he spent a good part of the 50s and 60s in prisons.
His mother did prison time for Strong Armed Robbery and Manson had an uncle who also committed crimes in which he was subjected to and aware of at a very young age. The absent and rejection of his mother over the years affected him profoundly.
Having a strong work ethic and becoming successful is very important, but caring about other people and going out of your comfort zone to solve problems is equally important. Dedication to helping others should go hand in hand with the dedication people have to personally becoming successful. By simply taking the time to be interested in others, the world could change for the better in so many ways. If people were more open minded to what other people had to say, tragedies such as such as school shootings would severely decline. After analyzing the characteristics Americans possess I have come to realize there is much room for improvement, but I have faith in the American
At this point I knew it was time for me to revise and asses my need and motivation to be in this field. I was doing a disservice to myself. I began to look within myself and saw that I was seeking gratification through other to make me feel good about myself. I began to seek counseling for myself which helped me to deal and cope with my unfinished business in my personal life. I began to love me and know that I am wonderful being who I am and most of all being real with myself.
