Power Is Majority In the story “Some of Us Had Been Threatening Our Friend Colby” by Donald Bathelme demonstrates power of majority leads to corruption. Colby’s friends are majority in the story, so they basically decide what’s right or wrong over everything by being the pressure group. These friends thought that Colby “now he’d gone too far, so we decided to hang him”(1). Despite the fact that Colby may have gone to far or not, the truth can be varied. No one knows whether Colby should be killed or not. However, in the story the larger group of people had always the power to decide Colby’s future and even his death. Because this group made the choice and agreed to kill Colby, he must die. And Colby who is an individual cannot win against the pressure group. Furthermore, the majority group’s power leads to corruption, they are correct because they believed they are correct and no one in the story can be against that, so they did not “pay attention to this argument”(1) about murdering Colby. The majority group has no idea that they might be incorrect about their decision, but since everyone feels comfortable with it, they didn’t hesitate about making the decision. Through being the majority crowd they manage to corrupt morality and decide to eliminate Colby. In conclusion, the author makes this fiction story to tell the readers how is power manipulated into corruption by a majority group like a political party with the majority seats on the parliament, at the end they rule all the opposition minority parties like Colby’s
