The Epic of Gilgamesh is an attention-grabbing poem that was written in cuneiform on baked clay tablets. In 1853, the first fragments were discovered among the ruins of Nineveh, but the text wasn’t decrypted and translated until several decades later. When cuneiform was officially decrypted in 1857, researchers discovered that the tablets were written in Akkadian, an ancient Semitic language associated with Hebrew and Arabic. Then, in 1872, a young British Museum curator named George Smith realized that one of the tablet fragments told the story of a Babylonian Noah, who survived the great flood sent by the gods.
