Advantages and Disadvantages of Students Working or Travelling In some countries of the world, students are often motivated to do jobs or visit different places for a year between graduating from high school and entering university for higher studies. Students’ taking a gap year has both advantages and disadvantages. Let us first discuss the advantages of students’ taking a year off after leaving high school. First of all, by working or traveling, students can gather precious knowledge and experiences about the outside world. For example, they can learn about different cultures and languages of different communities. Secondly, by being engaged in different types of jobs, students can earn money which will help them support themselves. For instance, they will be able to bear their academic expenses/use this money to pay for their tuition fees and also contribute to their family expenditure. On top of it, by working and traveling students can remove their monotony and tiredness caused by continuous study. However, taking a year off may pose certain disadvantages for the students. To begin with, students working or travelling may lose their interest in continuing their studies as they will find it more interesting to earn money. Thus they could lose the benefit of university education and the chance to earn a higher income all their lives. In addition, they may not keep pace with their peers as they postpone their study for one year while their friends will learn a lot of valuable academic knowledge during this time. In sum, although there are certain dangers involved in students’ taking a gap year, the benefits/positive aspects of taking a year off far outweigh its downside. Therefore, it is a wise decision to inspire the students to go for work or travel on completion of their high school
