Dantrelle Ferguson ENGL 1102 Prof. Gibson 3 April 2013 Bad Girls Club, The Bachelor, Love and Hip Hop, Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, Honey Boo Boo, Real Housewives, I’m pretty sure you have heard of or seen at least one of these shows. Just about every network channel has a reality television show. Reality TV is one of the most popular genres today. Reality programming has single-handedly resuscitated broadcast television (Ron 255). According to Nielson Media Research, reality TV filled four out of ten slots of most watched shows. However, these shows does more harm than good. I believe reality television has more of a negative effect on society. Reality TV shows adds fuel to the fire of stereotypes. Women of all races are stereotyped in many reality shows. They are portrayed to look a certain way whether it’s by the way they dress, how they act, or even their makeup. Jersey Shore follows the lives of Italian-Americans who spend their time partying and drinking; then the idea is thought of as people who reside in that area are only known for partying and drinking. Another example would be Bad Girls Club; the episodes are about a diverse group of girls who basically see one another as competition which leads to a house full of drama and fights. Majority of girls then get the mentality that they can’t live under the same roof with a group of girls because it all revolves around jealousy. The Bachelor is also another example of many; A spends his time with many different women in hopes of finding one female to marry in the end. As bad as it already is, men think it is okay to talk to numerous females without it being a problem. Professor Peterson spoke at an event I attended on campus.
