In the poem ‘Poppies’, the mother feels very sad; “Three days before Armistice Sunday and poppies had already been placed on individual war graves” this is a reminder that war kills people which makes her sad as her son might be killed in war. She also feels very scared; “I pinned one onto your lapel, crimped petals, spasms of paper red, disrupting a blockade of yellow bias binding around your blazer” this suggests that she might be thinking of her son which wounds her emotionally as he might be wounded in war. Similarly, the mother in ‘At the Border, 1979’ also feels very emotional as they are going back to their homeland; “We are going home”, this suggests that the mother is very happy that they are back, however, the narrator doesn’t seem to understand why the adults become very emotional when the two countries looked identical. In “At the Border, 1979”, Choman Hardi uses a child perspective to view the absurdities of both adult behaviour and borders that were caused by conflicts. In this poem, the narrator doesn’t understand why crossing the border was very important to the adults when it’s physically easy to cross.

Miss Emily was always thought of as a weird and mysterious person to her neighbors, but the neighbors confirmed their theories of Miss Emily when they found out that she had killed her lover, Homer Barron and slept with his body for forty years in the upstairs of her house. Faulkner uses complex plots and a mixed-up time sequence to approach a despairing and gloomy image of Miss Emily to the reader. However, Faulkner uses colors to represent certain moods and mental conditions of Miss Emily during the story The color black has appeared twice in the whole story, one is in the first description of Emily’s appearance, is when the officials went to her house to discuss the tax issue.

HOW DOES STEINBECK PRESENT CURLEY’S WIFE IN OF MICE AND MEN Steinbeck introduces Curley’s Wife into the novella in a negative way. We first hear of her through gossip after George and Lennie arrive at the ranch. Candy says she gives the men on the ranch ‘the eye’ and calls her ‘…a tart’. He is warning them of her flirtatious ways and hesitates before calling her a tart as he knows what he’s saying is scandalous. He also says ‘wait’ll you see Curley’s wife’.

“The Things They Carried” is a text that focuses on writing as a form of coping with trauma and discusses how exaggeration is sometimes needed in a story to convey the message that the story-teller is trying to get at. An example of this is when the author talks about how for Rat Kiley “facts were formed by sensation” (89). Kiley is described as telling his stories as though they are intended to be tragedies, even the funny parts. This is because there is an underlying sadness to every war story, even though humor can be found in them. Part of this may be attributed to the ‘education’ each soldier received when they first went off to the war.
Both Orwell and Dillard are very good at crafting a story from memory. They both use methods of story telling that engages the reader and makes you want to read more. Orwell carefully uses his words to give you as much feeling and thought as you read his story; where as Dillard writes her story in a way that progresses it with just enough information to keep the story fast and interesting. I believe that I write my stories more in the way Dillard does than Orwell. I usually write a story using minimal information and using just enough atmosphere so that you know what is happening as the story progresses.
The next morning, Parker finds his wife dead which makes him angry. He never wanted Lynn dead, but to only beat her up a bit to teach her a lesson.
