Interpretation of “Poppy seeds” by Jerome Advanier Jerome Advanier is a German author, I’m going to analyse his story “Poppy seeds”. The story deals with people’s relationships: love, jealousy and revenge, strong emotions which are interwoven in this enigmatic story. The story is set in a farm, particularly in rusted, derelict place behind the outhouses. After her husband’s nervous breakdown, the woman is forced to sell the farm. Arranging everything for the sale, she finds a clump of wild poppies. They bring back the old memories. The man she loves, those happy days with him, she has never loved her husband, she remembers about poppy garden the man promised to grow her, the agonizing pain of a loss, how could he leave her? Then, gradually, all pieces of a puzzled united in her mind and she realized that it was her husband, who had killed her lover. The author penetrates deep into the psychology of a woman, her feelings, and thoughts. The problems addressed in the story are well-known and widely spoken of. The central conflict of the story is the relationships between people. A woman, who is left alone with a man who ill-treats her, her only ray of hope has disappeared leaving only red poppies. By the way, this flower has a symbolic meaning in the text. This word is repeated in the text for 20 times. It’s a symbol of love, war and death, which is very important to create the atmosphere of the text. The author tells the story in the third person singular, his style throughout the story is simple, but pathetic. The author’s style is remarkable for his skills of story-telling. The story is written in a form of narration with elements of description. The genre [ʒɔŋrə] of the story is a detective, and the author managed to depict every detail so vividly, that the reader together with the main character jumped to the right conclusion, unwound this puzzle.
