Angel A Montaz PHL/320 27 April 2015 Laura Lewis Sweatshop Labor Practices Sweatshop labor is something we hear a lot too often in the TV, social media, and at work on the Human Trafficking training. Sweatshop is defined by the United States ARMY and the Department of Labor as company that breaks several human and Federal laws. Sweatshops are inhumane, companies force people on false pretended promises to work in unsafe, unsanitary, and harsh conditions for low or not wages. They usually use children, woman, and old people as well. Companies make millions each year off of sweatshop labor or unfair labor practices. Also this unfair labor practices are many times shown to be outside the country, but they have many that still happen internally within US. Take a look at these cases, Wal-Mart has been accused of practicing unfair labor standards in all their retail stores throughout the United States. According to an article written by Bryce Covert and published on the website Think Progress Wal-Mart has recently been downgraded in market rating. “Wal-Mart was lowered from a “market perform” rating to an “underperform” rating, citing three main causes: understaffing, and erosion of its price advantage against competitors, and costs associated with intensifying pressure from workers organizing” (Covert, 2014). Wal-Mart workers filed 30 counts of unfair labor practice with the National labor Relations Board (NLRB). The representations alleged “widespread and egregious attempts by Wal-Mart to silence e workers who have been calling for a change of course at the company” (Our Wal-Mart files over 30 New Counts of Unfair Labor Practices Against Wal-Mart for Attempts to Silence Associates, 2013). These example show that of a US organizations that still continue to abuse labor practices both within our country as well as internationally. Although at times these companies have faced tarnished images, these businesses continue to reap profits while executives and stock holders swim in the benefits.
