Moreover, due to the massive aging ‘baby-boomer’ population, it is reasonable to assume that the role of the government in medical endeavors, including pharmacy practice, will increase over time. Medication ordering, preparation, and delivery employ multiple processes; multiple checkpoints and safeguards are embedded in order to flag and correct errors before the medication reaches the patient. Continuous monitoring of pharmacy processes is crucial in the identification and prevention of errors. (ASHP, 2011) Problem Statement It has been said that “to err is human,” but in the pharmacy, medication errors are generally caused by failure of the system, not by individual staff failures. Because of their complexity and the numerous process opportunities for breakdown, medication management procedures need to be monitored and improved on an ongoing basis. This paper will explore the varied aspects involved in the development of a strategic plan for planning and implementing an automated, outpatient pharmacy operation. Decision making based on a thorough review of information from existing management and operational systems is viewed as an intervening mechanism between a pharmacy’s context and its effectiveness. The strategic plan for automation examines this assertion by developing a model through testing the extent to which the importance of information decision making assists in translating uncertainties and strategies into operational effectiveness.
