Introduction to Pervasive development disorders: Pervasive development disorders can also be known as PDDs. It is a group of conditions that causes delays in the development of many simple tasks such as, being able to socialize with others, to communicate, and to use imagination. Children with these conditions are usually confused in their thinking and have problems understanding the world that's around them. Pervasive development disorders can be seen in children around the age of 3, although the condition begins earlier than the age of 3. The child's parents often go without recognizing a problem till there child is a toddler that can not walk, talk or is not developing as well as other children at his or hers age. The cause of Pervasive development disorders is not yet known, however researchers are still continuing to look for the answers as to what might be causing them. Some studies say genes could be a contributing factor to autism as some have biochemical or metabolic disorders or there could be an issue with the nervous system. Studies are in the progress of examining the structure and function of the brain in people with autism for an indication that may help us understand these conditions better, as well as how to treat and/or prevent them. How common are pervasive development disorders? Researches say pervasive development disorders occur in about five to 15 children per 10,000 births. PDDs are most common in boys than in girls, with the exception of Rett's syndrome, which occurs almost always in girls. How are pervasive development disorders diagnosed? If a child is showing signs of having a Pervasive development disorder, the doctor will do an evaluation by doing a medical history and physical exam.
