One controversial topic that has been up for vote in the California ballot is legalization of marijuana. Proposition 19 is the “Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act”, this would have made it legal for adults 21 and older to possess one ounce of marijuana and consume it in private as long as no children were present. Proposition 19 would have also allowed adults 21 and over to grow pot in small gardens or plots. Also, this would have authorized local governments to sell the drug at licensed establishments, as well as to permit commercial pot cultivation. Marijuana legalization was overwhelmingly rejected by California voters in 2010. Despite the fact that the proposition was immensely turned down, it enjoyed high-profile support. A few supporters of proposition 19 were the state branches of the NAACP, the League of United Latin American Citizens and the former U.S. Attorney General Dr. Jocelyn Elders. Dr. Elders shared in an interview that, “as a pediatrician, [her] primary concern is the welfare of young people,” she also added that she is bothered by the large number of American youth serving time in prison for nonviolent marijuana-related…show more content…
For instance in this topic, there is no evidence to support the assertion that legalizing pot will stop the illegal sale of the substance, and help regulate marijuana use. There is also no guarantee that by no longer imprisoning marijuana users they will not use more dangerous substances and move on to other criminal behavior. The side of the controversy that is best is decided by the individual, how it is viewed in their culture and morals he or she may have. Lastly, the decision of legalization rests in the hands of our government and what they believe is best for the protection of our country and its people.
