An alcoholic is a man or a woman who suffers from alcoholism - they have a distinct physical desire to consume alcohol beyond their capacity to control it, regardless of all rules of common sense(Nordqvist 1). Many people become alcoholics because of genetics, stress, depression, and other reasons. The World Health Organization (WHO) says there are at least 140 million alcoholics in the world; unfortunately, the majority of them are not treated(Nordqvist 1). As a result of not receiving treatment, many of these people affected develop liver failure and other life threats. There are certain criteria’s that are to be met when signing up for a transplant, as I’ve stated already. Alcoholics should not even be considered when it comes to asking for a liver transplant. The alcoholic did the damage to the liver themselves, what makes you think they won’t do it all over again and waste the donated, healthy liver? The organ donor would not be happy knowing their healthy liver went to an abuser of alcohol. Everyone knows that alcohol causes damage to the liver. Alcoholic liver disease occurs after years of heavy drinking. Alcohol can cause inflammation in the liver. Over time, scarring and cirrhosis can occur. Cirrhosis is the final phase of alcoholic liver disease(Alcoholic liver disease 1). Alcoholics do not deserve a second chance to ruin yet another liver, and they will eventually die if they do get the liver transplant and drink again. Many cases of liver disease, which occur in nonalcoholic people, have no apparent cause. Some people obtain this from acetaminophen overdose, prescription medications, herbal supplements, viruses such as hepatitis, autoimmune disease, and even cancer. Alcoholics create liver disease from their overconsumption of alcohol. So the next time you think alcoholics should receive a second chance, think
