Brock McKee English 1113 Dr. Hayes 11-1-11 Adoption Adoption is something that may not mean much to some, but to others it means everything. The dictionary defines the word adopt as: to take over as if it were one’s own, in most cases this refers to an adult taking over a child as if it were their own. Taking a child as your own means so much more than just that. When a person takes a child as their own they are giving that child more than they will ever know. Throughout the world today there are an astounding number of orphaned children, and the only way to solve this problem is for more people to step up to the plate and adopt children. There was one thing that set them apart from their peers, they both desperately wanted children, but due to medical complications they could not reproduce themselves. After many months of consideration, they finally decided to adopt a child. The entire adoption process took about seven months. During that time the Dillard’s were preparing themselves for their first child. They did everything from reading parenting books to buying toys for their new son. However, no amount of time would have prepared them for what being a parent would actually be like, especially being an adoptive parent. When Tony first arrived at their home, the last thing that they wanted to do was make him uncomfortable, so they did everything they could to make him feel welcome. As soon as Mike and Joni started to get to know Tony, they knew that they had made the right decision.
