Adjusting to Cumberland County When I was 12 years old I moved to Greenup, IL from Arcola, IL. In Arcola I lived with my mother Teri Matteson. Arcola was a very nice place to live but there baseball programs were not very nice so I moved to Greenup with my father Allen Matteson to play baseball and be with my family. My Dad and Mom both grew up in Greenup so I had family to help me with the adjustment. In Junior High, baseball was played in the fall instead of the usual spring so I was able to meet a person my age before school started which was a big help. When I first moved I regretted it immediately because I felt like I betrayed my Mom, even today I wonder if she thinks of me a little differently because I choose to live with my Dad.…show more content…
We all still keep in touch but that’s all. In Greenup I made friends right away, it’s sad to say but some of the friends I made are closer to me than anyone from Arcola. The adjustment I was afraid of was peers, I and a very shy individual and will not reach out to take to someone, but baseball brought me all the joy in my life to this day. Baseball is how I met all of my closest friends. I actually got two of them here at Greenville with me which makes moving here a cake walk compared to moving in seventh grade. I know it’s wrong to judge people by their race or weight, but when I moved to Greenup I was on the heavier side and never really realized it till I lost all the weight in High School. I have always wondered why they became the best friends I would ever need. They say they didn’t care about my weight but it was Junior High of course they did that’s how our society is. I try not to ponder this too much I just hope they know I am very grateful for their friendship. A small but very important reason it was easy to move was that Greenup was a smaller town and more ethically Caucasian based. I’m not racist, far from it actually, it’s just that Arcola was primary Mexican based. I had many Spanish speaking friends but they liked to talk in their native tongue sometimes and I never learned Spanish. I even took it in
