Art or Sport? Since 17th century ballet in the french court, ballet has developed into more of a sport rather than an art. Dancing 4 hour days, 24 hour weeks MINIMUM all year round with no off season. Plus school, homework, practicing routines extra curricular activities, family time, personal time, and sleep. Having the same or greater aerobic capacity, muscular power and endurance, muscular strength, anthropometry, and flexibility as football players and gymnasts. And yet ballet is still not considered a sport in the “real world”.( Jenkins, B. B. )Ballet is and will forevermore be a sport, unless it regresses. One source a Jenna Garecht of New York tells a tale of her dancing experience. (Garecht, J.)She says that as starting out younger dancing was more for the fun of it, but as she got older it became more and more serious about dancing. A second source SRHS Senior Lauren Allaire, dancer of fourteen years says “We condition every rehearsal, which includes a six minute plank, three hundred sit ups, fifty burpees, we run laps, and a lot more. We become complete athletes. I have practice for twenty hours a week in order to prepare for the competitions”.As defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary (Merriam-Webster Inc.) an art is something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings. Another definition of art is works created by artists : paintings, sculptures, etc., that are created to be beautiful or to express important ideas or feelings. Dancing is performing someone else’s or your own creation using the skills acquired from rehearsals and conditioning, such as the aerobic capacity, muscular power and endurance, muscular strength, anthropometry, and flexibility.
