Paul W. Bryant After reading Paul Bryant’s book "-On Winning" I've learned lots about a great man. Who I previously knew nothing about. Paul lived an extraordinary life and fulfilled his goals. He lead multiple teams into winning streaks and may have even revolutionized the game of football. Paul Bryant is a man amongst men. Paul Bryant was born on September 11,1913 in Fordroyce, Alabama. He was the 11th child out of 12 children. His parents were William Morroe and Ida Kilgore. Not much is known about his childhood up until high school. Paul went to Fordroyce Highschool where he started his football career playing as a senior. Also while in high school, Paul earned his nickname, The Bear, while wrestling a bear during a carnival event. He was suppose to be paid one dollar for every minute wrestling the bear but never received the money. After high school Paul received a football scholarship to Alabama University. He played for the Crimson Tides up until he graduated but went on to assist coach the team. During his college years Bryant married Mary Harmons in 1935. They went on to have two children, Mae Martin and Paul Jr. After assist coaching the Crimsons for three years, Paul got an offer to assist coach the Red Sanders at Vanderbilt University, which he accepted. Though that job position quickly ended at the beginning of World War Two. Paul volunteered to serve in the United States Navy during the war and was placed on a Navy ship in South Africa. He never saw any action during World War Two but was in a ship to ship collision in which Paul was ordered to abandon ship but disobeyed orders to save his men. Two hundred men died. After that incident Paul was honorably discharged and was given numerous medals. He left at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Paul Bryant's football career really started after graduating and becoming assistant coach for the Crimson
