The Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act of 2010 Marissa Burton HCA 305 Delena Chappell-James January 11, 2013 There are huge challenges that the United States health care system is facing. The American health care system, although it is considered to be the most costly system in the world, delivers irregular and often times demonstrates poor quality of care. With the rising number of uninsured Americans and the elevated health care costs, we see just how big of a problem our health care actually is. What will the P.P.A.C.A do for our health care system (Filson, Hollingsworth, Skolarus, Ckemens, & Hollenbeck 2010)? The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act were signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010…show more content…
Medicare’s physician reimbursement regimen is filled with underpayments and bad incentives. Although it is true that Medicare can knock down physician fees, this is not one of the greatest strengths, but actually it is considered to be a weakness. Ultimately, these underpayments are transferred to patients in the form of short visits; less time spent with the doctor, speedy hospital discharges, and compromised care. A significant amount of a doctor’s day is devoted to detailed documentation, endless paperwork, and signatures. This leave little room for doctor’s to spend time at the bedside of their patients. In addition, coverage is no longer denied to children due to pre-existing conditions. Medicare Part D recipients will acquire…show more content…
In the article Five Big Negatives about PPACA, the mandate requires everyone to maintain coverage or face a possible financial penalty. This will deliver serious challenges for those individuals who are self-employed. The government is making it requirement that you purchase something that is directly related to your body. The bill is a revenue bill after all. One positive key feature of the P.P.A.C.A that I think will have the biggest effect on our health care system is the preventive health coverage. Preventive care can save a lot of Americans; avoiding those life-threatening illnesses and improving the overall health of the patient provided at little or no cost (Day, 2011). The American health care system may be the most costly health care system in the world and may deliver poor quality care at times, but our system is improving and we are just getting started. I admit there are some areas of concern that may raise the eyebrows of some people like penalties, increased taxes, and the estimated price tags for these reforms, but there are also benefits provided by the P.P.A.C.A that will provide quality care to Americans and improve the overall health care
