An investigation into the representation of young people in PBR&B music PBR&B is a genre of music that begun in the late 2000s. The term ‘PBR&B’ is used to describe and categorize an alternative style to contemporary R&B. The term came about as a joke used by Sound of the City writer Eric Harvey (http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/95-i-started-a-joke-the-saga-of-pbrb/), using a combination of R&B and PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon), a beer that is associated with hipster subculture. The lyrics of the song represent how young people struggle with relationships and how they can be confused about the concept of love. For example, the words ‘I think I may love you’ are repeated throughout the song. This represents young people as it shows how indecisive they are and how here is a battle between logic and emotion with young people in relationships. The visual codes in the video represent young people as they are very explosive and vibrant. The man in the video has a typical hipster look with a weird hair style and out of control beard, something that you’d see most young ‘hipsters’ with. The hegemonic value (Gramsci http://www.aber.ac.uk/media/Documents/marxism/marxism10.html) of the video is that it takes time to find love and that love may not be what it seems. This is relevant to young people as they are often in a rush to fall in love and find companionship. This also subverts the idea that young people don’t care about love anymore and live more promiscuous lifestyles. The binary oppositions (Levi-Strauss – Structural Anthropology) in the video represent young people as they show how young people often lust for the opposite gender and start new relationships.
