P1 – Part A: Know the importance of teams. In this assignment I am going to investigate different types of teams and the benefits of working as a team for an organisation. A team is a group of people that share a common purpose, to which they are all committed, empowered to set goals, solve problems and make decisions. They usually have the same end objective and work together with their individual skill sets to achieve this. Formal Teams; Formal teams are formed as part of an organisational structure, usually where managers organise and delegate work. An example of formal types of teams is management teams within an organisation; defining their role within the organisation structure brings people in a business together. Other examples of formal teams are football/sports teams, company sales teams etc. Informal Teams; People form to achieve their own goals or meet their own needs; they are generally formed by personal preferences and usually have a lack of official information. Informal teams do not often have a rank structure as in; having a leader or someone who co-ordinates as task. All team members are usually equal in every task given to that team. Examples of informal teams are social groups such as a group of friends meeting for lunch at school. Size of the Team; The size of the team is usually dependent on the needs of the business. Odd numbers usually see themselves to be more beneficial in a team as it prevents decision deadlock, this means that if a decision needs to be made quickly and a vote was to take place there would always be a definite decision. Small teams – small teams make it easier for everyone in the team to be included, it allows to ensure everyone’s views are heard and expressed and some say can ensure focus. Clarity is also seen as an advantage of smaller teams, meaning everyone has a line of sight to everyone else. Everyone is
