Jamila Donta Gallbladder Cancer Gallbladder cancer is a very rare cancer that most people don’t know much about. It is very important to know the causes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments. Outline: I. Causes and Risk Factors A. There are very few causes or risk factors of Gallbladder Cancer. 1. It’s generally more common in women than men and usually shows up between the ages of 50 and 60. 2. Being overweight can increase the risk of getting Gallbladder Cancer. 3. Gallbladder Cancer tends to show up in Native Americans and Hispanics more than others. 4. Having gallstones or cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) can also cause it. II. Signs and Symptoms A. People need to know the common signs and symptoms of the Gallbladder Cancer. 1. Weakness and loss of appetite 2. Steady pain in the upper right abdomen 3. Weight Loss without trying 4. Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes) 5. Vomiting due to obstruction of the Gallbladder B. Early symptoms are similar to gallbladder inflammation from gallstones. III. Diagnosis A. Early diagnosis is usually not possible because there are no significant symptoms during the early stages of gallbladder cancer. B. Doctors use tests and procedures to detect, diagnose, and stage gallbladder cancer. 1. These tests include physical exams and history, ultrasound exams, CT scans, and MRIs. IV. Treatment A. The most typical and efficient treatment is a cholecystectomy. 1. A cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder. B. If surgery is not possible, endoscopic stenting of the biliary tree can reduce jaundice and a stent in the stomach could possibly relieve vomiting. C. Chemotherapy and radiation is also used.
