A private accounting firm that is considering going paperless. To transform the office to a paperless office will be an enormous organizational change for the company. She has been hesitant to make the change due to the cost, time commitment, and low tolerance for change. I. Company Background a. History of Joan Hastings, CPA Joan Hastings, CPA graduated from The University of Texas at Arlington in December of 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (Accounting) and subsequently studied for and passed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. After graduating from UTA, Mrs. Hastings worked for Haskins & Sells (now part of Deloitte) for a year. She was then hired by Southland Royalty and worked for the firm until August 1980. Mrs. Hastings left the public workforce in 1980 to raise her three children. In 1987 she purchased her first home computer and decided to employ her entrepreneurial spirit and start a home based accounting practice. b. Current Business Environment The business plan established by Joan Hastings, CPA has evolved since 1987; however, the target client has remained the same. Mrs. Hastings aims to serve small businesses year round along with catering to a seasonal client base of individual and corporate tax. Her firm gains clients through referrals, networking, and leads groups. She has sufficient clientele for her desired workload and, therefore, she has never had the need for an advertising budget. Joan Hastings, CPA’s main competitors are other small, private firms (year round competitors) along with H&R Block, Liberty Tax, and other name brand tax filing agencies (seasonal competitors). II.
