ENGL 1100 30 October 2009 Organization by Process Analysis A Modest Proposal, written by Jonathan Swift, is an essay that utilizes many rhetorical devices. The proposal was written to the people of Ireland, and addressed the dire issue of starvation. The essay was organized through process analysis, which means that Swift established a process that incorporated steps to fix the problem of severe poverty in Ireland. Swift’s use of organization, through process analysis, in A Modest Proposal, enhances the overall flow, which allows him to easily get his point across to the reader. Jonathan Swift used the technique of process analysis to offer a well thought and organized proposal. He began by thoroughly describing the problem of poverty at hand. An example of the poverty situation is, “the streets, the roads, and cabin doors, crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, six children, all in rags”(Swift 362). This description gave the reader an idea of how bad the situation was, and built up some suspense as to what Swift was going to propose. However, the main effect of the introduction to the process analysis was its impact that foreshadowed the proposal’s flow, which was description followed by analysis. Many times a process analysis will present a problem or object, and then dive into the process. However, this process analysis went into a different direction, briefly, when Swift gave a few advantages of his plan before going into the heart of the process. An example of one of Swift’s advantages is, “instead of being a charge upon their parents or the parish, or wanting food and raiment, they shall on the contrary contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing, of many thousands”(Swift 363).
