Of Mice and Men - Steinbeck's Ideas

Steinbeck presents the bunkhouse as a very simple and boring place. You know this because of the description given about the bunkhouse in the passage; "the floor was whitewashed and the walls unpainted". Since it says that "the floor was whitewashed and the walls unpainted" it shows that it is very simple because there are no vibrant colours or anything that stands out. That also shows that it is very boring because there is no variation in colours so you will always be looking at the same thing. The word "unpainted" suggests that the inhabitants of the bunkhouse are quite lazy because they can't be bothered to paint the walls. This may lead to the reader thinking that the inhabitants of the bunkhouse don't want to work and that don't want to do anything but laze around so they may dislike the inhabitants. The reader may also be eager to go to the bunkhouse and paint the walls because they don't like things to be boring and they want things to be perfect. Steinbeck presents the bunkhouse inhabitants as very unkempt and uneducated individuals. You find this out because of the dialogue between George and Candy as well as the description of the bunkhouse in the passage; "Positively kills lice, roaches and other scourges. Say what the hell kind of bed you giving us anyways. We don't want no pants rabbits." Since George says "Positively kills lice, roaches and other scourges. Say what the hell kind of bed you giving us anyways. We don't want no pants rabbits" it shows that the bunkhouse inhabitants are unkempt because they need to have something that will kill all the lice, roaches and other scourges they have whereas people who are clean won't get any lice and therefore won't need any lice killer. When George says "We don't want no pants rabbits" it shows that he may be uneducated because he is referring to the "lice, roaches and other scourges" but he doesn't
