George is the dominant male in the relationship , because of Lennie’s disability it causes they both very much trouble back in Weed and on the ranch they arrive too after escaping. Also Lennie’s disability causes himself to be put aside from others on big events. While all the other ranch hands go to town, Lennie, Crooks, Candy, and Curley’s Wife are left behind. They’re left behind because to all the other strong and healthy men they’re outsiders. Lennie is considered as an outsider because of his mental disability.
The reason I think so is because spiritual, mental, and emotional aspects are much more significant than physical aspects. The story Of Mice and Men took place during the Great Depression, where close friendship between people was rare and unusual, and George benefited because he had a companion that traveled with him and always stayed with him. Lennie told George that if he is causing too much trouble for George, he can live in a cave alone, but George did not accept. When George shot Lennie (for Lennie’s benefit) and the friendship ended, George became extremely lonesome and he desired a friend like Lennie. Although the duo had the best relationship unlike anyone else in the novel, they also had their problems and obstacles. Mainly George was the one who oversaw Lennie and maintained the friendship despite Lennie’s mild case of mental retardation, which made it difficult for Lennie to care for himself. Lennie is the most obvious character to sympathize as he gets killed at the end of the novella and seems to have a child like mind as shown by how Slim notices this by saying “He jes like a kid” Steinbeck shows Lennie as childlike to show that Lennie is innocent, this is used to show that when Lennie does something wrong he does not do this to be cruel but he is just oblivious to what he is doing. Secondly, Steinbeck likens Lennie to an animal through the way Lennie moves; “dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws” which shows Lennies vulnerability as when he is killed he is not aware of what is going to happen which is similar to how the way Old Candy’s dog was killed as the dog did not know what was going to happen to it and just followed Carlson unaware of Carlson’s intentions; this trusting nature of Lennie makes the reader sympathize him.
George only had one choice, and that was to take care of Lennie himself. Even though the dream was more achievable now that Lennie was gone, it ment nothing to George. Everything that George ever had in his mind was destroyed with the mistake of leaving Curley's wife and Lennie together. The best laid plans of mice and men often go wrong. In conclusion the reader feels most sympathetic for George because taking care of Lennie caused him many unavoidedable problems, emotional burdens that will haunt him for the rest of his life, and a shattered dream.
