Of Mice and Men * Author * John Steinbeck * Main Characters * George is a small man that travels with and cares for Lennie. Although George says how much better his life would be without Lennie, George continues to take care and protects him. * Lennie is a big guy with a mild mental disability and travels with and completely depends on George. He and George have a dream of having their own farm where he can take care of the rabbits but he does not realize his own strength. He often pets soft things and kills them, not realizing it. * Candy is a ranch handyman who lost his hand in an accident and fears that he will be fired from his job at the ranch because of his handicap. * Curly is the boss’ son. He is a small, mean man and is very confrontational. * Curly’s wife is the only woman in the book. She is often called a “tramp” and is always dressed nice. * Crooks in the only black man on the farm. He works as a stable hand and is very isolated from the other men. * Setting * When the book first opens up, George and Lennie are in the middle of nowhere near a river in California. They two men were just dropped off three miles from the ranch were they plan to work. They finally make it to the ranch where most of the story takes place. The story ends back where it started by the river. * Plot Summary * We first meet George and Lennie by a river in California. They were just dropped off a bus three miles away from the ranch where they plan to work. When they get to the ranch where they find that their bunks are made of burlap ticking. The boss comes into the bunks and questions the two why they were late and about their skills. George does not let Lennie talk and this makes the boss suspicious. The boss then leaves and Slim enters. Slim is very impressed by the two and is somewhat jealous
