My idea of Marriage and Single Life 101 林忆莲 1018100109 Francis Bacon was one of the leading figures in natural philosophy and in the field of scientific methodology in the period of transition from the Renaissance to the early modern era. Bacon’s famous essays include “Of Studies”、“Of Truth” and“Of Marriage and Single Life”. As we know, Bacon’s essays are full of wisdom. Here, I will show some ideas of one of Bacon’s famous essays——Of Marriage and Single Life. Throughout the essay of Marriage and Single Life, Francis Bacon compared marriage with single life in different aspects, such as the influence of family, personality and benefits of society. In this short essay, Bacon listed the advantages of marriage and disadvantages of single life, trying to persuade single men to form their family by contrast. After reading this great essay, I got a strong feeling of marriage and single life. I began to change my former ideas on marriage and single life. Bacon analyzed marriage and single life in a macroscopic view which is quiet different from others. Although Bacon listed many advantages of getting married to the individuals, I think that his main intention in writing this essay is to let people know that the benefits which married men can bring to the society. According to Bacon, being single also has its advantages. As Bacon said in his essay, “Certainly the best works, and of the greatest merit for the public, have proceeded from the unmarried or childless men; which both in affection and means, have married and endowed the public.” As the unmarried men have enough time、affection and money, they can be more charitable to the public.
