Jenna Giammalva English 3 per.2 February 1, 2010 Ms. Lindroth Thesis: In the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain exposes how ignorance causes violence, and how personal gain overrides moral deeds through the use of satire. Mark Twain’s Notice and Pap’s ongoing diatribe reveals how ignorance undercuts one’s credibility. For example, In Mark Twain’s Notice he cites, “Persons attempting to find a plot will be shot” (2). Twain is exposing the truth in satire throughout the novel and people who don’t understand that are ignorant. In more simple terms, if you only go away from the book with only the plot then you are stupid.
Daniel E. Samide said of Ambrose Bierce‘s work, “Bierce’s story is a vivid reminder of how narrative techniques we may take for granted become powerful when combined by a mastery magician of words. We could all do worse than take a hint from Ambrose Bierce when we ply our own word magic(Samide par.13).” Ambrose Bierce provides the reader many opportunities to better understand the thoughts and emotions of the protagonist, Peyton Farquhar, through his use of symbolism throughout An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge. The symbolism in An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge is first evident in the name of its protagonist, Peyton Farquhar. Peyton Farquhar is a very unusual name. Bierce uses such an odd name to add to the meaning of the story’s plot.
Moore emphasises this by selecting a part of the interview a part where he follows James into his room to see the under his pillow, he places subtitles for this scene to show the audience the conversation they have as James puts the gun to his head as a joke. Moore ends the interview with James ironically saying "well, there’s wackos out there". Thus the selection of Nicolas as an interviewee positioned the audience to believe his reality that the majority of Americans that own guns are radical fanatics. Whilst Moore uses some humorous techniques, Obama is serious throughout his speech. He emphasises this by using a disappointing and saddened tone.

In this story we are set at the sight of a hanging by the Federal Army. Peyton Fahrquhar the southern sympathizer has been caught, moments from swinging at the gallows. He is in a state of reflection. Peyton is aware he has moments left, yet surprised at the way he has trailed off from the current affair.
McCarthy uses religous rhetoric in Bells descriptions of Chigure. By calling him a ‘prohphet of destruction’ it is Bells way of articulating something that he can not understand. Throughout the novel we come to realise that Bell infact has no religious faith. Therefore Chigurh is not a transendent force of evil, he is human and in control of his own choices. What is really being articulated is that ‘we are living in a time of change’ modern society is a society based on the freedom to choose our actions as they are no longer ordaned by a religon.
Our officers oughta be shot for that. She was carryin’ supplies and war material.” A few paragraphs later the book ends, the protagonist knowing that his own “heroism” in battle, the blood-lust that fuelled the victory, was manipulated, based on a lie. It’s a final moment of
Though this was done for a purpose it does not work well on all levels. This technique he uses, no matter how it was to come across, seems to be a way to dumb things down. Arnason story is simple and very easy to follow. There is no need for the use of interruption to explain to us what is happening. Arnason tells us that we are supposed to ask ourselves what the ring means; when he tells us that he slipped in details and clues to show us what is called foreshadowing.
Initially, in the second section, a “gray-clad soldier rode up” and discussed with Farquhar about the Owl Creek Bridge. (302) Gray was the color of the Confederacy, but at this point it was a misleading indication of affiliation; this was a Federal scout searching for Confederate sympathizers among the civilian population. The color gray indicates a distortion of the truth by both parties. It shows the deceit by the civilians, who tried to help fight the Federal army in many small ways, and the willingness of the Federal army to do whatever was necessary to win the war. Shortly after Farquhar falls in the water, he looks towards the marksman who nearly shoots him and “...through the sights of the rifle...observed that it was a gray eye and remembered having read that gray eyes were keenest.” (304) This seemingly paranoid detail, although truly impossible at the range Farquhar was looking, establishes a link between the marksman and Farquhar.
“Swimming in a dirty river with dirty me you were very beautiful.” Nakayama uses repetition to make the audience focus on thought that he sees him self as “dirty” and how he doesn’t deserve her. Belonging helps us to search for our identity. On the other hand identifying and categorising your self you can know where to belong or where not to belong. And people tend to feel insecure when they feel that they don’t belong or when they feel that they are being judged. Steven Herrick, the author of The Simple Gift by and the Wasao Nakayama, the composer of Strange Chameleon communicate this idea through the text affecting the audience by using techniques as first person, repetition, and
The reader now worries for Rainsford’s life, making him or her want to read further to discover Rainford’s fate. After he falls from the yacht, Rainsford washes ashore, finds a mansion, and is greeted with a gun. The story said, “ In his hand the man held a long-barreled revolver, and he was pointing it straight at Rainsford’s heart” (8). Any reader would now be even more drawn in and left once again fearing for the protagonist’s existence. The next example of iron is when General Zaroff reveals his unnerving secret: he hunts humans!
