Objective and Subjective Criteria

When it comes to making hardware or software purchase decisions there are two different types of criteria one could go by; objective criteria or subjective criteria. Objective criteria evaluations are based purely on verifiable facts; no biased opinions or previous experience. An objective statement could be that a particular piece of software will only work on a specific operating system or only one particular form factor for a hard drive will work on a specific mother board. Subjective criteria are a statement based on the speakers view or perspective. Subjective criteria cannot be proven by concrete facts. A subjective statement could be an advertisement about a specific computer being the best of its kind. Sometimes, when you are making a decision about a piece of hardware or software, subjective statements may help in the decision making process on your purchase. For example, a subjective statement made by a friend about a particular brand of computer can influence your decision on whether or not to purchase that brand of computer. This however may not be based on any actual facts; only the friends personal opinion. While listening to the opinions of others may have a role in the decision making process, utilizing objective criteria, in my opinion is the best idea in the purchasing decisions of hardware or software. An objective evaluation of a product will be based on only facts and will not be influenced by the evaluator’s personal opinion or views. If I were in charge of a company’s IT department, I am sure they would not want me making any purchases based solely on the opinion or personal view of someone else. These purchases may cost the company a lot of money if the opinion of someone else turned out to be wrong. It would be safe to say that I would probably no longer have a job in that
