THE O.M. SCOTT & SONS COMPANY BACKGROUND O.M. Scott & Sons Company is a business in the lawn care and garden product industry. It is facing a good economy as manifested by the increase in sales. However, competitors are slowly entering the market. Currently, the company is reviewing the results of 1961 and preparing plans for the 1962 selling season. Sales and net income were increasing except in the years 1960 to 1961. Problem arises from difficulty of nationwide distribution. It then increased its workforce to handle the voluminous orders, set dealerships which will be in-charge of distribution to different areas, and establish a trust receipt payment system for the assurance of goods as well as returns of investments. Presently, the company is using a combination of traditional seasonal dating plan and trust receipt plan. . PROBLEM With the current internal complications, what must O.M. Scott and Sons Company do to be able to decrease cost of sales and operating expenses? Should the company keep with its Trust Receipt Plan in order to maintain 25% growth rate? CORPORATE OBJECTIVE A goal for the company in the next few years is to have an annual growth rate in sales and profits of up to 25%. It also supplies a range of products for professional horticulture. Scotts owns the leading brands in every major category in virtually all of the countries where it has a significant presence.
